Unfold the Fold

The concept of “the fold”, the vertical cut off point at which further content on a web page can only be reached by scrolling, has long been a factor that dictates web design. It’s a common client request that we as web designers endeavor to include as much as possible above the fold. But have we taken a moment to consider whether uses are happy to scroll up and down a page and also how consistent is “the fold” point from one computer to the next?

Offline web applications with Firefox 3

Robert O’Callahan, a New Zealand based developer of the Mozilla/FireFox rendering engine, has spoken about how Firefox 3 will deliver support for offline applications. This is significant because it will allow people to use web applications like Gmail, Google Docs and Spreadsheets in the browser even when they’re offline. Rod Drury also pointed out in his post how this makes Firefox attractive as the browser platform of choice for SaaS providers (Software as a Service) such as salesforce.com.

Where are the Joneses?” is a new interactive sitcom from Steve Coogan’s Baby Cow productions. Where this sitcom differs from those before it is that each new episode is released onto YouTube and the shows fans are able to keep in touch with the goings on via social networking sites including MySpace, Facebook, Flickr, various blogs updated by the shows cast and even Twitter.
