Offline web applications with Firefox 3

Robert O'Callahan, a New Zealand based developer of the Mozilla/FireFox rendering engine, has spoken about how Firefox 3 will deliver support for offline applications.

This is significant because it will allow people to use web applications like Gmail, Google Docs and Spreadsheets in the browser even when they're offline. Rod Drury also pointed out in his post how this makes Firefox attractive as the browser platform of choice for SaaS providers (Software as a Service) such as salesforce.com.

This new development has opened the debate as to whether this is the right direction for browsers vendors like Mozilla to be heading and whether offline features are better left to emerging technologies such as Apollo, as Ryan Stewart who works for Adobe writes in his post on Why Firefox 3's Offline Feature is a Bad Idea (link removed due to 404- http://blog.digitalbackcountry.com/?p=666).
